What Are We Eating Tonight?

My husband, Kyle, has always been a big fan of Dave Ramsey. We have never actually done his total money makeover program but listen to him on the radio frequently & have made attempts (some very successfully) to do as he recommends. One of the programs that he endorses is E-Mealz. We have discussed this as an option for about a year now & we finally signed up just over 1 week ago. The purpose of E-Mealz is to take the planning work out of grocery shopping & cooking. This is perfect for us since we could have a pantry full of food & still stand there for 30 minutes asking each other, what should we eat tonight? It is a mere $5/month & for that, you get a weekly meal plan for your suppers (5/wk). This includes what you'll eat, the ingredients you'll need for those meals, the recipe, and the best part..the shopping list! We signed up for the "Publix meal plan for 2" and it comes up with a meal plan based on what's on sale at Publix that week. Therefore, I take my grocery list that is already divided by dairy, produce, meats, etc & it tells you what brands are on sale. Life simplified!! We tried this last week & our grocery bill, without any couponing, was $75. This includes ALL of my groceries (not just the suppers that are provided by E-Mealz). The typical cost of food just for the suppers on E-Mealz is $35-45/week. This week, I am including our menu (but E-Mealz asks not to share the recipes with the public since that's how they keep cost so low) in case you might be interested in joining.

Meal 1: Deep Dish Pizza Casserole with Italian Salad
Meal 2: Cheesy Chicken & Ranch, steamed broccoli, garlic toast, and Banana Griller for dessert
Meal 3: BBQ Meatballs, garlic toast, and salad
Meal 4: Teriyaki Shrimp, scalloped potatoes, & steamed green beans
Meal 5: Cheesy Sausage Florentine, fresh squash, fried okra

*Of course, you can substitute veggies if you don't like something. Or, something Kyle & I found ourselves doing right from the start was looking at the sides & picking just one that we wanted. We typically don't eat meat + 3 sides style meals, so we figured to cut cost even more, we would continue eating the meat + 1 side meals that we are used to.

*Another thing worth mentioning, is that there are low-fat and low-carb meal options available too. I haven't tried them, so I can't comment on how the food tastes. However, our first week was great. Prep time was very short & actually quite easy!!

*I was paid nothing to write up this post on E-Mealz (bummer, huh)...just thought I would share our great find with other bloggers!!

Until next time..
Love, Jen

Friendship Friday

If you're stopping in from That 22 yr old Housewife, welcome! I am a 20-something wife to Kyle & mom to be to Miss Kinsley Anne. She is due in November & this blog is all about our life as it unfolds. Feel free to join us for our crazy ride! :)

Just a general update: Kyle & I are headed to Raleigh this weekend & I get to see my family!!!! My dad's side of the family is Jewish & a cousin is being bar mitzvah-ed. It is a huge celebration and a way to welcome him into their faith at the age of 13. Congratulations Riley! Pictures will be posted. I am well equipped for the 3-4 hour ride with a heating pad, body pillow, and blanket. Anything to make my back semi-comfortable!!

Also, check out this blog. Ben Boland is a friend of Kyle's who Kyle is on the Ducks Unlimited committee with. Ben & Lucy welcomed THREE little miracles into this wild & crazy world 3 weeks ago, all weighing about 2 pounds. Yes, they had triplets. Send lots of love & prayers their way if you don't mind.

Love until next time,

Sweet Pictures...

In the mood to check out my maternity pictures?

Leave me a comment & let me know what you think!! Which are your favorites?

ps-these were done the day before picking up Avery to bring her home, so that's why she's not in any pictures.

Mama Jen @ 28 weeks..

Weeks: 28 weeks Thursday

Cravings: I don't know that I've craved anything strange lately. But mannn, the homemade Butterfinger ice cream that I made yesterday sure hit the spot!!

Any foods you don't want? Not really...other than my typical pre-pregnancy stuff (citrus in particular)

Symptoms? Stronger & stronger movements. I can now feel when she turns, and scrooches. She also has some serious force behind her punches & kicks. She is one feisty little girl. I enjoy that it is something that only I can feel (other than when people put their hands on my belly, but that's not quite the same). It's something so special that she & I share. I frequently start giggling in church because she more often than not, gets all riled up while we're sitting in there. Yesterday she started out kicking my bladder but decided to turn all kinds of ways & ended up kicking or punching the top of my stomach. My entire stomach was moving..it was quite amusing. I am also nesting. Is it too early to start?? Who knows, but it's here & in full force. Kyle has to frequently settle me down because he wants to have a moment to "chill." My house will look really pretty soon though!! :)

Showing: undeniably.

Boy or Girl?
Miss Kinsley Anne Settle

Bought anything? THE CUTEST Izod Rain boots & a "Life is Good" blanket. Also, some drawer organizers in a pink & green paisley for her dresser to put socks, onesies, etc in.

above rain boots: Marshall's HomeGoods, $9.99

Shopping for anything? Nope! We will just wait until after my next 3 showers to see what we need!

..And the dad to be? Awesome! He has really stepped up helping me out since I can't quite do everything I used to do. He came grocery shopping with me last night, helped me move furniture so that the floors could be mopped yesterday (that just had to be done in the middle of everything), helped me bang out all of our rugs, etc. He also tells me to just rest when he can sense that I'm getting tired. I have a tendency to overdo it because I don't like to ask for help...but he's trying to put a stop to that :)

Most recent appointment? Last week I went for a "sick" followup & heard Kinsley Anne's heartbeat, strong as always! I have been having some pains over the last 3 weeks on the right side of my upper abdomen. They are thinking maybe it's gallbladder dysfunction. I had an abdominal ultrasound, which showed no gallstones..meaning no immediate need for surgery, etc. GREAT NEWS! I am now taking a medication to help a little bit and I am trying to be decently conscious of the things I eat (minus homemade ice cream yesterday). I can definitely tell if I cheat & eat a meal high in fat. As to what they will do for my gallbladder long term? They don't know. My doctor last week said that gallbladder dysfunction can be transient, meaning it will go away post-delivery, which is what we're hoping for. If the pain persists post-delivery, I will have a different kind of scan, a HIDA scan done (which you can't have done during pregnancy because of the radioactive tracer that they use). That will help them determine if I need my gallbladder taken out. Anyway, it may be nothing, so I'm not worried, and neither should you!! :)

Next appointment? Tomorrow is my 28wk appt. I am going to drink my 10oz of yumminess tomorrow for my 1hr glucose tolerance test. I am praying for good results for many reasons (I want to be healthy for baby Kinsley, gestational diabetes frequently means bigger babies, and I don't want to have to do the 3hr glucose tolerance test!) & you can join in with me if you'd like!! Tomorrow marks my last monthly visit. After that, it's onto my every 2 week visits!! Time is flying!!!!

Onto non-pregnancy things..
  • As always, there is never a dull moment in our household. About 1.5 wks ago, Kyle got a phone call from the breeder of Bowen, our 1.5yr old German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP). She was letting us know that Bowen's parents had mated again, and had a litter of 6 puppies on June 5th. She had 1 female & 1 male left, and was willing to give one or both to us for free. Kyle & I have discussed for the last 6months+ when the right time for a 2nd puppy would be, knowing we wanted that to happen at some point. Kyle asked the breeder to email us information about the puppies, why they were not yet spoken for, and pictures. Interestingly enough, many people wanted these puppies, but she did not feel that their lifestyles suited the dogs well & she knew how much Bowen loved his house and she wanted us to give him a friend (or 2!). So, we received the pictures & fell in love immediately with the little girl. We arranged to go meet her, bring Bowen along, to make sure that she was what we wanted & that Bowen would like to be a big brother. Bowen was great with her, allowing her to furnish him with 100s of kisses to the nose. They went swimming in the lake (the breeders live on Lake Murray) together and really seemed to get along well. We brought her home last Saturday & have not turned back. Avery has quickly become an important part of our family & although some think we're absolutely out of our minds for adding a puppy to our home in my 3rd trimester, I think it was worked out extraordinarily well. She is a sweetheart, sleeps through the night (minus if she realllllly has to go to the bathroom, which has been 1-2 times since we got her), loves Bowen completely & follows him around constantly, & is such a good snuggler for naptime. You can see her precious self below & then below that is a picture of our 2 babies together.

Until next time..
Love, Jen

Kinsley Anne,
WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I can't tell you that enough!!! Everytime I see a sweet baby, I can't help but smile thinking of what you might look like. In less then 3 short months, you will be at home with your mama & daddy and we will just be hugging and kissing on you all of the time. We are so ready to meet you, but in the meantime, keep growing & developing perfectly!!
Love, your mama & daddy

I'm sure anyone expecting or with a new miracle has realized how expensive recliners, gliders, and rockers can be. I have obviously checked out Babies 'R' Us, but does anyone have suggestions or recommendations on where they found a good deal? We are looking for a neutral color & something that has a place to prop your feet up! (either an ottoman or something along those lines) Let me know!

Thanks, Jen

I'm sorry that the below post is in bold. All of a sudden, my editing options have been reduced on my posts. I'm working on figuring it out but it is giving me a really hard time. I definitely do not know this html code stuff!

Mama Jen @ 26 weeks..

Weeks: 26 weeks Thursday

Cravings: Stilllll craving salad. In fact I frequently choose to eat a little Salad for snack rather than a candy bar..[but not always..hehe]...I know, I know.. this is not the Jen I am familiar with either. But generally, I'm just hungry still. Almost all things food sound good to me.

Any foods you don't want? Unfortunately for my low hemoglobin count, I am still not loving red meat. I find my iron elsewhere though...no worries.

Symptoms? MOVEMENT!!!! Kinsley will be a soccer player, gymnast, cheerleader, or something along those lines. I mean this girl can move!! I got so tickled on the way to the beach 2 weekends ago sitting in the car because my entire stomach would move and I could feel her up high and down low. Maybe she was doing a split or straddle?? There have been a few mornings that I have woken up at 4am or so because she gets SO active. One morning when Kyle's alarm on his radio went off, I'm pretty sure it startled her, because there was a hard thump and then nothing..whoops. I believe that sleep is going to start getting a little more difficult. bummer...Also, I am more tired again. Last week in particular, I took a nap almost every day after work. It's really hard for me to get up and keep going again before bedtime but I make myself.

Showing: oh yes.

Boy or Girl?
Miss Kinsley Anne Settle

Bought anything? Actually, I bought 2 candle sconces for the wall where her name is hanging. I bought 1 of the 2 necessary candles as well. The below sconces were $11.99/ea & the candles were $8.99 at Hobby Lobby, but then all of it was 50% off. I am also proud of myself. I made her a cute bow holder for her closet. I will post a picture & if you're interested in purchasing one for $5, let me know!

Shopping for anything? I will continue to look casually for wall hangings although I have found what I wanted for the most important walls!

..And the dad to be? Really well informed! Everytime I say, "Kyle I feel like...." or "Kyle, what do you think this could be?" He almost always has an answer! He has been reading his books & has most definitely done a better job preparing than I have. I am thrilled to see him in action in 3 months!

Most recent appointment? 7/27 was my 24 week appointment. Everything went great. I got an antibiotic for my sinus infection (and feel like a new person), heard Kinsley Anne's precious heartbeat (138-142bpm), and measured well for a November due date.

Next appointment? 8/24 for my 28 week appointment. I have my glucose tolerance test that day..wish me luck! I have 10oz of fruit punch (or at least that's what I will be pretending that it is) to drink 1 hr before my appointment. They will then check my blood sugar to make sure that my body responds appropriately. I have to get my platelets and hemoglobin checked at this visit as well. It seems that since I'm pregnant, both of these have gone down according to my routine GI bloodwork. The hemoglobin is no shock to anyone since my stores are not great due to my "
anemia of chronic disease." My platelets being low surprised me a bit, but the OB said that this is not uncommon in pregnancy. It is called Thrombocytopenia in Pregnancy. No big deal is the consensus...just monitor it.

Onto non-pregnancy things..
  • Kyle & I have still been on the move. Two weekends ago, we went to the beach with my parents. They stayed in a house at Surfside Beach. It was great to see them again. We went for a nice walk on the beach & of course a little swim. Kinsley got to "ride a wave in" and she got really calm out in the water. I think she'll be a water bug like my sister & I. We also fished at the pier Saturday night & I caught an 18in shark!!! It was kind of scary but fun. It was the first fish to be caught in our family & also the biggest. Kyle got the most fish, catching 2 sharks. I can't wait to see my family in just 2.5 weeks up in North Carolina.
This past weekend, we took it pretty easy. Kyle had some things to do outside & I did a lot of relaxing, sleeping, & also found time for a little shopping. We had a cornhole tournament & corn roast at Church Sunday night. Kyle were in charge of cooking corn & we made something like 5 dozen ears. It was delicious!! If you are in the upstate, Belue Farms in Boiling Springs, SC has some amazing produce & yummy goodies for sale. It's worth the time to check them out.
  • This weekend, I am looking forward to a few things. Saturday, I would LOVE to go to the lake a little while & then Kyle and I will probably decide on a nice place to eat for our 2 year anniversary. It is coming up on the 16th & I am so incredibly lucky to have an amazing husband and soon to be daddy by my side. Sunday, I am excited about going to Kyle's cousin's baby shower. Unbelievably, she is due exactly 1 month prior to me, on October 18th with a little boy. I am so happy that Kinsley will have a cousin to protect her & play with while growing up! She has a jungle theme going on in her nursery & I will post pictures from the shower afterwards.
  • Also, I am still working on a post about being lucky enough to have a few things for Kinsley that are family heirlooms. Look for that soon!
  • Until next time..
    Love, Jen

    Kinsley Anne,
WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I tell you that every day but I can't wai to show you by hugging & kissing on you! 3 months is going to fly by & who knows. Maybe you will have plans, unlike your mommy, to make your appearance before your due date (but full term nonetheless please!). It is a blessing to know that you are still growing strong & developing normally. We love you & can't wait to meet you sweet girl!!!!
    Love, your mama & daddy

    live passionately....life is short.

In honor of a great friend, Nate Henn, who will never be forgotten.
We all miss & love you!!

Nate, having a great time as always, at our wedding:

Let me say that when I go to heaven one day, I hope that people here on Earth have as many nice & heartfelt things to say as we have to say about our good friend, Nate Henn. Nate was a 25 year old humanitarian who left this Earth far before any of us expected it. I guess that's why our name's not God. Nate had a strong, loving spirit that filled rooms as soon as he entered. He had a contagious smile & laugh that left people feeling better, by just being around him.

Nate grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended Concord High School, where I had the pleasure of becoming a very close friend to him. There was a large group of us that could frequently be found hanging out together, just laughing and being ourselves. In college & into adulthood, Nate & I kept in touch. We didn't talk as much as in high school, of course, but both of us knew that we could always make a phone call. And when we met up on school breaks & my trips home, things picked up exactly where they left off.

I'm not exactly sure where the passion inside of Nate was lit for Invisible Children, but it was obvious to me, and most likely anyone who approached the topic with him, that he had his heart 100% into this adventure. Invisible Children, as I've learned more about it since his death, is a not-for-profit organization involved in ending the use of children as soldiers in Uganda. Nate had worked with IC for 18 months without pay, doing what he was passionate about. Then came the opportunity for Nate to visit with some of the children he had worked so hard for & he raised money toward his trip. He was to stay with his aunt & uncle who were missionaries there in Uganda. As many know, the World Cup was in the final games while he was there. He, innocently, went to watch the final game of the World Cup with some of the children that he was there visiting. That night, his life would be ended due to a terrorist bombing at the rugby field where he was watching the game. His life here on Earth is over, but his eternal life with the God he believed so strongly in...that life, is just beginning.

Nate had just found out on my birthday (days before he died) that I was pregnant since he was constantly traveling. He wished me a happy birthday & told me that we would catch back up when he got home from Uganda. Well, unfortunately that phone call won't get to happen. I won't get to see Nate meet Kinsley Anne for the first time with his big smile & loving arms. But, I take such comfort in knowing that he was exactly where he wanted to be when his last moments came. He died living a passionate and meaningful life..a life that I know led him to hear "well done good & faithful servant...well done" at the doors of heaven. And isn't that what we all long to have said about us one day?

Nate and his older brother who dressed up to embarrass him on prom night before pictures!

Below was written by another friend of mine & one of Nate's close friends, Devin Garcia:

I don’t think there’s been a person who has met Nate that didn’t instantly like him. Likewise, I don’t think there exists a person who has met Nate who hasn’t been deeply effected by him. Nate was in a class of the best kind of people. He was universally loved and he loved universally.

I was roommates with Nate our freshman year at the University of Delaware. I observed how he interacted with new people and was awed on numerous occasions by his ability to almost instantaneously connect with people he’d never met. Nate’s ability to connect with people is the reason why so very few people who met Nate remained strangers to him. I suspect it was this natural ability to connect with people on the deepest human levels that inspired Nate to devote his life to alleviating the suffering of others.

Although I moved away after our freshman year, I always thought of Nate as my best friend. He would occasionally write to me, genuinely interested in how my life was going and excited for what was coming up for me. I never felt that I deserved his interest but I always wanted it. Hearing Nate get excited for me helped me realize all that I had going good in my life. Nate had the rare, subtle quality of being able to inspire people to be better simply by giving his attention to them.

You get selfish with people like Nate; because he gives so much and because what he gives is so worthwhile you want it all for yourself. Luckily, what Nate had to give… his time, his friendship, his love… he gave of so abundantly and so freely that it was never in short supply for the many people who sought it out.

We have all certainly lost a great deal because Nate was so rare and so valuable. My heart and prayers go out to his family as they have lost the most. My heart and prayers go out to Nate as well. Nate, you will be remembered as being compassionate, loyal, ridiculously friendly, funny, honest, energetic… and on and on. You are one of a kind Nate. I love you, we all love you.

Nate is 2nd to the left..along with everyone who rode in our limo!
You can read the article about Nate's funeral here that took place last weekend in Delaware. Hundreds gathered and spoke about Nate. There are videos on the same website if you want to watch clips of his siblings/mom/preacher speak of Nate.
